Automatic Real-Time Drilling Supervision, Simulation, 3D Visualization and Diagnosis on Ekofisk

Abstract: eDrilling is a new and innovative system for real time drilling simulation, 3D visualization and control from a remote drilling expert centre. The concept uses all available real time drilling data (surface and downhole) in combination with real time modeling to monitor and optimize the drilling process. This information is used to visualize the wellbore in 3D in real time. eDrilling has been implemented in an Onshore Drilling Center in Norway. The system is composed of the following elements, some of which ar… Show more

“…This reduces the number of false fault detections, but computer support during the re-framing process is still missing. During normal modes of work, real-time models of the drilling operation aids the driller in understanding downhole conditions and making optimal decisions [12][13][14]. When a discrepancy between sensor data and the real-time model is observed, an anomaly that is, the driller might enter the re-framing mode.…”

“…The traditional display mode of the wellbore surface is in the form of a curve or two-dimensional graph, and consequently, the results are difficult to interpret. Real-time display of a wellbore as a cylindric three-dimensional (3D) structure based on information obtained from the downhole measurements is critical because it provides information for real-time understanding and evaluation of downhole working conditions and geological structures [3][4][5]. The actual physical structure of a wellbore is a cylinder that is several thousands of meters long, formed by the drill bit after drilling into the earth.…”

“…Currently, some efforts have been made on drilling 3D visualization; however, most of them are traditional desktop software which cannot provide online service for RTOC. At present, some companies built such visualization products: 3D visualization software enables drilling engineers, geophysical engineers, geological engineers, and reservoir engineers to work with the same data volume environment, breaking professional and geographical constraints, and making multidisciplinary [4][5][6][7][8][9]. Combination really becomes a reality.…”
