Automatic Speech Recognition

Abstract: Automatic speech recognition (ASR) is an independent, machine‐based process of decoding and transcribing oral speech. A typical ASR system receives acoustic input from a speaker through a microphone, analyzes it using some pattern, model, or algorithm, and produces an output, usually in the form of a text (Lai, Karat, & Yankelovich, 2008).

“…ASR is a “machine‐based process of decoding and transcribing oral speech, [with] (…) acoustic input [being] analyze[d] using some (…) algorithm, and produc[ing] an output, usually in the form of a text” (Levis & Suvorov, , p. 1). Research on ASR for L2 learning was initiated in the 1990s by U.S. military research programs to find ways for cadets to practice speaking on their own (LaRocca, Morgan, & Bellinger, ).…”

“…The pedagogical benefits of automatic speech recognition (ASR), also referred to as speech-to-text, voice-recognition, or dictation, have been highlighted in second language (L2) teaching and learning research (Cucchiarini & Strik, 2018;Levis & Suvorov, 2012). The use of ASR appears to contribute to reading development in children (Mostow, Huang, & Junker, 2008) and ASR might be used to address common errors in L2 Dutch morphology and syntax (Cucchiarini, Van Doremalen, & Strik, 2008).…”

“…Automatic speech recognition (ASR) is the process by which machines automatically decipher and transcribe oral speech. An ASR system receives an acoustic signal via a microphone, which is then analysed and processed in order to generate an output, typically in written form [ 1 ]. The roots of the first speech recognition systems date back to the early 1950s [ 2 ].…”
