Automating Collection of Pain-Related Patient-Reported Outcomes to Enhance Clinical Care and Research

Abstract: Adherence to pain-related PRO data collection using our enhanced tiered approach was high. No demographic or clinical identifiers other than age were associated with differential response by modality. Successful ancillary support should employ multimodal electronic health record functionalities for PRO administration. Using automated modalities is feasible and may facilitate better sustainability for regular PRO administration within health care systems. Clinical Trials Registration Number: NCT02113592.

“…), may be a valuable screening tool with this population. The PEGS is brief (and therefore more realistically integrated into routine clinical encounters), viewed favorably by clinicians, and includes an item specific to whether pain has interfered with the patient's sleep . Additional research is needed to inform decisions regarding which screening tools to administer, with which subgroups, and at what frequency.…”

“…In comparison with paper‐version or interview‐administered tools that require human resources, automation is feasible, sustainable and aided with multiple collection opportunities (e.g. parent portal and clinic staff encouragement) . Implementing an automated mechanism to collect and integrate risk assessment data for use in routine WCV into providers' workflow is feasible, but clinician utilization of the risk score and counselling practices should be continuously evaluated.…”
