5083 aluminium (Al) alloy materials have extensive structural applications in transportation industries because of their high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance. However, under conventional fusion weldings, these materials are limited by their porosity, hot cracking, and distortion. Herein, friction stir welding (FSW) was performed to join a similar AA5083 alloy. A post-weld cold-rolling (PWCR) process was applied on joint samples at different thickness-reduction percentages (i.e., 10%, 20%, and 40%) to identify the effect of strain hardening on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the friction-stir-welded joint of AA5083 while considering the serration-flow behaviour at stress–strain curves and dislocation density of the post-weld cold-rolled (PWCRed) samples. FSW induced a 20% reduction in the tensile strength of the joint samples relative to the base metal. PWCR also reduced the average grain size at the nugget zone and base metal because of the increase in plastic deformation imposed on the samples. Furthermore, PWCR increased the dislocation density because of the interaction among dislocation stress fields. Consequently, the tensile strength of the friction-stir-welded joint increased with the increased cold-rolling percentage and peaked at 403 MPa for PWCRed–40%, which significantly improved the serration-flow behaviour of stress–strain and welding efficiency up to 123%.

Model 7000 series alloys with and without copper were fabricated into sheets to study precipitation hardening behavior under isothermal aging conditions. Samples of each alloy were subjected to 3 h annealing treatments at various temperatures to produce a range of precipitate size distributions. Hardness, electrical conductivity, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) were used to characterize the aging behavior of the two alloys. Precipitate size distributions were modeled from the scattering curves for each annealing condition using a maximum entropy method (MEM) and compared to select transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results. The measured average precipitate diameters from TEM were in good agreement with the average precipitate diameters determined from the scattering curves.

Incorporation of Corrosion Effects into the Life-Cycle Analysis of AW-2017A-T4 Aluminium Alloy under Bending Moment

The paper presents the results of fatigue tests of corroded AW-2017A-T4 aluminium alloy samples subjected to an alternating (symmetrical) bending load. Although there are a number of works describing pre-corrosion fatigue in aluminium alloys, relatively few of them concern bending fatigue effects, in some selected alloys only. Here, the AW-2017A-T4 samples were exposed to electrochemical preliminary corrosion by immersion in an electrolyte, a 3.5% solution of NaCl in water. Several variants of series of samples differing in immersion time were tested. Based on the analysis of the results obtained, Basquin’s fatigue characteristics were developed and compared to the characteristics of the material in its nominal state, which allowed for conclusions on the influence of corrosion effects. The characteristic curves show the susceptibility of the test material to corrosive processes, which results in a decrease in fatigue life along with the increase of pre-corrosion time. The samples with longer immersion duration revealed larger surface losses and widespread corrosion pits.
