Autonomic mechanisms in ventricular fibrillation induced by myocardial ischemia during exercise in dogs with healed myocardial infarction. An experimental preparation for sudden cardiac death.

Abstract: The relationship between activity of the autonomic nervous system, myocardial ischemia, and malignant arrhythmias has been investigated in a new experimental preparation for sudden death. Fifty-seven dogs were chronically instrumented and studied under control conditions (n = 15) and 1 month after production of an anterior myocardial infarction (n = 42). The protocol consisted in occluding the left circumflex coronary artery for 2 min, commencing at the last minute of an exercise stress test and extending thro… Show more

“…In autonomically-intact dogs, spontaneous ischaemia-induced VF increased in vivo following i.v. atropine (Goldstein et al 1973), with similar conclusions drawn from control experiments in the dog model of SCD (Schwartz et al 1984;Vanoli et al 1991). This is supported by data during direct VNS where atropine abolished protection (Yoon et al 1977).…”

“…Nonetheless, the protective effect of VNS during coronary artery occlusion in the postinfarct canine exercise experiments was either reduced (Goldstein et al 1973) or abolished (Schwartz et al 1984) when heart rate was controlled. VNS prevented VF in 55% of animals that were rate controlled vs. 92% of control dogs in sinus rhythm, suggesting that bradycardia 'is important but not essential'.…”

“…In 1983, Schwartz et al 90 showed that the incidence of ventricular fibrillation was decreased from 66% to zero by performing left stellectomy in post-MI dogs. Issa et al 91 demonstrated that thoracic spinal cord stimulation at T1-T2 segments reduced the incidence of ventricular tachyarrhythmias in canine model of ischemic cardiomyopathy from 59% to 23% when applied during myocardial ischemia.…”
