Autonomic related vertigo

Abstract: Objectives:To demonstrate clinical evidence that vestibular symptomatology can occur in relation to autonomic dysfunction. Characterization of clinical findings and treatment response would then allow autonomic related vertigo to be differentiated from other vertiginous conditions that present in a like manner. Study Desigm This was a retrospective review of 113 patients that described symptoms consistent with spontaneous, rotational vertigo and autonomic dysfunction. Methods: Vestibular, otologic, and autonom… Show more

“…In the current study, giddiness/fainting were considered to have been induced by orthostatic hypotension, according to a report about the incidence of giddiness in Japan. Exposure to excessive stress attenuates the autonomic function of individuals with stress-related personalities [24,25]; subsequently, autonomic dysfunction often causes orthostatic hypotension and giddiness [26,27]. Therefore, our results agree with those of previous reports.…”

“…29 Although the lightheadedness is believed to occur as a result of a transient acute decrease in cerebral blood flow, the mechanism of vertigo is still poorly understood. 28 The underlying mechanisms of BPPV have been better elucidated than those of MD or other hydropic states. Residual dizziness is a commonly encountered condition after BPPV.…”

“…This may suggest a link between dizziness and autonomic dysfunction, primarily in the form of orthostatic dysregulation (OD). Previous investigations that examined autonomic function in dizzy patients have confirmed this association (4,5). Some authors suggest a causal role in OH and autonomic dysfunction in certain manifestations of nonvertiginous dizziness, such as light-headedness upon ambulation or straightening from a bent position (6,7).…”

“…Some authors suggest a causal role in OH and autonomic dysfunction in certain manifestations of nonvertiginous dizziness, such as light-headedness upon ambulation or straightening from a bent position (6,7). Head-upright tilt table testing (HUT) has emerged as a useful method to understand the role of autonomic dysfunction in the dizzy patient (3,5,8). The relationship between OD and dizziness prompted this evaluation of the usefulness of clinical orthostatic testing in identifying OD as an underlying cause of nonotologic dizziness.…”
