Autonomy as a Prospective Predictor of Perceived Burdensomeness and Thwarted Belongingness Through Symptoms of Depression

Abstract: This study examined the relationship between sociotropy, autonomy, depression symptoms, perceived burdensomeness, and thwarted belongingness in a sample of 113 undergraduate students. A prospective design with three time points was utilized to determine whether personality styles and depression symptoms play a role in the development of perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness, two interpersonal suicide risk factors. Time 1 autonomy predicted depression symptoms at Time 2; Time 2 depression symptoms… Show more

“…This finding identifies a potential pathway through which individuals with chronically elevated depression and anxiety symptoms may experience greater suicide riskvia increases in acute negative affect. Prospective research has indicated that depression and anxiety symptoms temporally precede affective constructs encompassed within prosed ASAD criteria, such as feelings of thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness (Hill et al, 2018;O'Keefe et al, 2016). Further, supporting the importance of ASAD components in suicide risk among those with chronically elevated anxiety/depressive symptoms, agitation was one of the strongest acute predictors of suicide in a sample of over 900 patients with an affective disorder diagnosis (Fawcett, Scheftner, Fogg, Clark, & Young, 1990).…”

“…Additional work supports its two‐factor structure, with TB and PB as closely related but separate factors (Freedenthal, Lamis, Osman, Kahlo, & Gutierrez, ). Past work has successfully used the INQ to detect changes in TB and PB in short time frames, similar to the 8‐week interval used in this study (Kleiman, Liu, & Riskind, ; O'Keefe et al., ). Participants rate the extent to which each item reflects their current life on a Likert scale ranging from 0 ( not at all true for me) to 6 ( very true for me).…”

“…One possible mechanism explaining this result is that providing support to friends offline may reduce feelings of perceived burdensomeness, a variable strongly related to SI severity (Testa et al, 2017). As previously noted, depressive symptoms may have a negative social impact (O’Keefe et al, 2016). TGD individuals who experience depressive symptoms may be more likely to experience SI and have distorted perceptions of the level of support they are providing their friends and may therefore not experience the benefits from providing that support (e.g., increase in self-esteem).…”
