“…The appearance of silver grains over the mineralization front of dentin at 4 h in both the control and LACA-treated animals may represent noncollagenous matrix glycoproteins of odontoblast origin as previously reported by Weinstock et al [32]. If the silver grains do in fact represent 3H-glycine labeled glycoprotein of odontoblast origin, one would have to conclude that such glycoproteins are secreted by some other route than the typical collagen-containing secretion granule.…”

“…All four antibodies yield essentially the same labeling pattern. Consistent with other studies (Riminucci et al 1995;Bosshardt et al 1998;Nanci 1999), immunolabeling for BSP and OPN is associated with the electron-dense regions of the extracellular matrix, viz., regions that are indicative of mineralized matrix and correspond to the dark matrix regions in decalcified sections that are stained by metachromatic dyes for light microscopy (Weinstock et al 1972;Schroeder 1991, 1994;McKee and Nanci 1993). The present study shows, for the first time, that the region of the established interface between the resorbed dentin and the repair cementum in human deciduous teeth is heavily labeled for both BSP and OPN.…”

“…Autoradiography, cytochemistry, immunocytochemistry, and elemental x-ray analysis have been used to elucidate various aspects of odontoblastic secretory activity (Katchburian and Holt, 1968;Weinstock et al, 1972;Weinstock and Leblond, 1974;Karim et al, 1979;Frank and Nalbandian, 1989). In addition to matrix deposition, the odontoblast participates in the removal of organic matrix breakdown products, presumably generated during the conversion of nonmineralized predentin to mineralized dentin.…”
