Autotransplantation: A biological treatment alternative for a patient after traumatic dental injury

Abstract: Traumatic dental injury is considered a public dental health problem because of a high childhood incidence, high treatment costs, and prolonged treatment time. Although management guidelines for traumatized teeth have been outlined, tooth loss following trauma is occasionally unavoidable. Here, we describe the successful interdisciplinary management of a traumatized central incisor in an 11-year old boy that was extracted because of a poor prognosis and restored by the autotransplantation of an immature donor … Show more

“…In the study by Vishwanath et al [ 30 ], a lost central incisor was replaced successfully by autotransplantation in combination with orthodontic treatment in a growing child who had previously undergone facial trauma. A unique aspect of their case was that autotransplantation was performed on a person who did not fit the standard criteria.…”

“…Several advantages of this technique have been reported. 4,7,20 First, before transplantation, the location, placement, and angulation of the donor tooth can be examined with the replica. In this patient, it was decided to rotate the mandibular first premolar by 90 to accommodate the tooth within the labiolingual width of the maxillary alveolus.…”

“…1,2 Many orthodontic patients in which anterior or posterior teeth have to be extracted replace a missing tooth with a natural tooth rather than with a dental implant or bridgework. 3,4 The advantage of tooth transplantation, unlike dental implants, is that transplanted teeth have living periodontal ligaments. Thus, the sense of mastication and occlusion can be perceived, and orthodontic tooth movement can be performed.…”

“…Dental autotransplantation is an economical and viable alternative for the replacement of dental organs helping to maintain dental functionality and harmony, as well as bone preservation in comparison with the usual prosthetic rehabilitation or dental implants [1] . Dental autotransplantation is a surgical procedure performed since the 11th century by Albucasis, it was introduced by Fauchard in 1728 in his book Le Chirurgien Dentiste and it was until 1950 when the first publications of cases performed with this technique began, which consists of extracting a tooth from its original position to place it in another area of the dental arch in the same individual [2][3][4][5] . The prognosis of this therapeutic option has improved thanks to advances in the understanding of bone, periodontal and pulp healing, as well as technological advances that today are more easily accessible for clinical practice to achieve success rates between 75.3-91% [6] .…”
