Auxiliary functional group diffusion dialysis membranes for acid recovery

Abstract: Anion exchange membranes with auxiliary group were prepared by quaternized brominated polyphenylene oxide and hydroxyl tertiary amine. The basic properties of the membrane were characterized using ion exchange capacity, water content, linear expansion rate, thermal weight loss, acid resistance and microstructure of membrane, and so forth. The application of the membrane in the recovery of acid by diffusion dialysis (DD) was also explored showing the excellent comprehensive performance where the dialysis coeffi… Show more

“…Previous studies have s that the separation factor is related to the morphology and functional groups of the brane [49,[51][52][53]. Therefore, the reasons for the increase in the membranes' S value as follows: firstly, with the increase in the PECH content of the membrane, the cros tion morphology of the membrane became uneven and rough, and according to Fig the increase in the phase separation resulted in a decrease in the S value [54]. Second the PECH content increased in the membrane, the IEC value also increased grad which allowed the membrane to obtain a higher S value [53][54][55].…”

“…Therefore, the reasons for the increase in the membranes' S value were as follows: firstly, with the increase in the PECH content of the membrane, the crosssection morphology of the membrane became uneven and rough, and according to Figure 2, the increase in the phase separation resulted in a decrease in the S value [54]. Secondly, as the PECH content increased in the membrane, the IEC value also increased gradually, which allowed the membrane to obtain a higher S value [53][54][55]. Thirdly, the increase in the degree of crosslinking with the increase in the PECH content led to the increase in the S value.…”

“…For instance, Zhang et al designed a new membrane stack configuration of selective electrodialysis, enhancing the overall selective separation ability of the ED for monovalent ions [7]. Apart from electrodialysis, ion exchange membranes also find applications in capacitive deionization (CDI), bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED), diffusion dialysis (DD), reverse electrodialysis (EDR) and ion exchange membrane bioreactors (IEMB), serving functions such as desalination, mixed salt purification, hydrogen production, acid/base recovery, energy production, and denitrification [8][9][10][11][12]. The development of IEMs diversifies their applications, necessitating the creation of new types of IEMs for broader uses.…”

“…According to its charge, the ion exchange membrane is classified as an anion exchange membrane (AEM) or cation exchange membrane (CEM). , Herein, the research focused on AEMs for acid recovery by DD. The AEM consists mainly of a polymer backbone and ion exchange functional groups. , The polymer backbone of the AEM can be divided into two categories: hydrophobic and hydrophilic. , Hydrophobic polymers mainly include poly(arylene ether sulfone)s (PAESs), poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO), poly epichlorohydrin (PECH), poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK), and polysufone (PSF) …”
