Auxin Levels in Tassels of Maize Cultivars Differing in Tolerance to High Population Densities

Abstract: To test the hypothesis that low tassel-auxin levels during early ear development result in high population tolerance, free plus esterified IAA was determined in tassels of three maize cultivars. IAA level was significantly higher in tassels of the most tolerant cultivar, a finding contrary to the hypothesis.

“…On the other hand, the hi^ levels of lAA present in the tassels of intolerant cuhivars would confer to the stammate inflorescence a greater capacity for nutrient mobilization and conopetition. Seyedin et aL (1980) carried out an experiment to conqiare levels of lAA in tassels of three field grown maize genotypes having differential tolerance to high plant density. Surprisingly, lAA level was dgnificantfy higher in tassels of the most tolerant cultivar, a finding contrary to the original hypothecs.…”

“…We wczesnych fazach rozwojowych organów generatywnych kukurydzy, rozwijająca się wiecha (męski organ generatywny) rywalizuje o składniki odżywcze z kolbą (organ żeński).
