Availability analysis of railway track circuits

Abstract: Railways are expected to operate with ever increasing availability. The availability of railway systems and subsystems influences the overall operational availability. As the track circuit is a key component of railway signalling and control, it can contribute significantly to the loss of availability of the railway system. One way to increase the availability of the track circuit is through implementing proper a maintenance policy. In this article, Petri-Nets have been used to develop models for availability … Show more

“…The safety of a running train depends on an efficient and reliable train detection system for proper signalling and controlling of railway vehicle movements [24]. The track circuit plays a major role in train detection and is still widely used in many countries including India [25, 26]. Besides its fail‐safe operation, there are certain limitations of a track circuit [27].…”

“…Various authors have evaluated the availability and/ or safety of railway signalling systems: Markov Chains, 21 Monte Carlo Simulation 22 and Stochastic Petri Nets 23,24 are suitable approaches for stochastic modelling to evaluate the RAMS of a railway signalling system. RAMS problems are normally concerned with systems that are discrete in space, i.e.…”

“…One way to optimize the track’s operationality is to provide fast and assertive inspections in its components. The most critical component is the signaling and control system, named Track Circuit (TC) [ 1 ]. The TC is a series of circuits installed over the railway that measures the shortages between tracks continuity between circuits.…”
