Local anaesthetics are an inseparable part of dental practice. Local anesthesia helps in relieving pain of the patient and also makes the comfortable during the dental procedure.also makes it painless as possible. Although they are effective in controlling pain, without proper knowledge of the safe dose and methods of administration inevitable complications arise. This study was done to assess knowledge and awareness of dental students on administration of local anesthesia and its various complications. An online survey was conducted with the help of Google forms was distributed to 103 undergraduate students pursuing dentistry. The questionnaire consisted of 15 questions that were based on dosage, administration and complication of local anesthesia. After obtaining the responses, data was tabulated in excel sheet and was subjected to statistical analysis. Results show that 40.8% agree that 4.4 mg/kg is the maximum dosage of 2% lidocaine with adrenaline, 45.6% students agree the importance of aspiration. 24.3% students know the complication of transient amaurosis to be blindness. 34% students know that ocular complications arise due to local anesthetic administration. No statistically significant difference noticed with the responses based on gender and educational status (p-value > 0.05). The overall knowledge and awareness about local anesthesia and its complications were only moderate among the undergraduate and postgraduate dental students. Postgraduates showed a better knowledge when compared to undergraduates.

Introdução: A Anatomia Humana é um componente curricular obrigatório na formação dos profissionais da saúde. Trata-se de uma disciplina básica que fornece subsídio para atividades de mais alta complexidade, como procedimentos clínicos e laboratoriais. Nesse sentido, o conhecimento da Anatomia nervosa da face se destaca como importante para a execução de uma anestesia local eficaz e segura em Odontologia. Objetivo: Avaliar a produção científica sobre o nivel de conhecimento dos cirurgiões-dentista sobre a Anatomia nervosa aplicada à anestesia local. Material e método: Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa sistematizada da literatura. Para este estudo foi realizada a busca de artigos em revistas indexadas nas bases de dados Lilacs, Scielo e Medline, utilizando como critérios de busca as seguintes palavras-chave: Anestesia Local, Conhecimento, Odontologia, Neuroanatomia e Clínica Odontológica, nos idiomas português, inglês e espanhol. Resultados: Permaneceram na amostra final do estudo, 05 artigos, após avaliação da responsividade aos objetivos do estudo. A abordagem do tema é ainda incipiente na literatura e não há estudos avaliando o conhecimento anatômico de cirurgiões-dentistas sobre a anestesia local. Conclusão: Sugere-se que sejam realizados novos estudos, preferencialmente com delineamento experimental, a fim de contribuir para a educação em saúde nesta área específica e reduzir as disparidades curriculares nos centros de ensino superior.Descritores: Anestesia Local; Conhecimento; Odontologia; Neuroanatomia; Clínicas Odontológicas.ReferênciasArruda RM, Sousa CRA. Drug therapy in dentistry is essential for patients' treatment and requires special care by dentists, so it must be part of a well-grounded education for predoctoral dental students. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of undergraduate students at dental schools in Brazil about the use of drugs in dental practice. The sample universe was comprised of all undergraduates enrolled in the last year of the dentistry course in three universities in 2010 (n=253). Inclusion criteria were students in their last year of enrollment and who agreed to participate in the research. The results were analyzed on Epi Info 3.5.1 software. Analyses were conducted with chi-square, Friedman, and Wilcoxon tests. Slightly more than half of the participants (51.9 percent) reported the ideal dose of anesthetic for a normal patient. However, their dificulties increased when asked about the relationship between the anesthetic and patients with systemic disease or those needing special care. Regarding drugs that usually cause allergic attack, only 29.2 percent and 36.6 percent, respectively, cited methyl methacrylate and latex. This study found that the knowledge of these undergraduates about the questions was deicient, so dental education should include more theoretical and clinical practice in recognizing the patient's medical needs.Ms. Araújo is a doctoral candidate, Preventive and Social Dentistry Postgraduate Program,
