Avaliação do estado nutricional de ferro e anemia em crianças menores de 5 anos de creches públicas

Abstract: Objective: To assess nutritional iron status and anemia prevalence in children less than 5 years old at public daycare centers in the city of Recife, PE, Brazil. Methods:A cross-sectional study, with a systematic random sampling of 162 children aged 6 to 59 months.Nutritional iron status was assessed in terms of body iron reserves (serum ferritin), transferrinemia (serum iron, total iron binding capacity, and transferrin saturation %), erythropoiesis (free erythrocyte protoporphyrin) and hemoglobin production … Show more

“…Of all, 29% had moderate and severe anemia. The prevalence of anemia was higher than that reported in other studies conducted in Northeast Brazil, 12,17,24 other Brazilian regions, 7,10 and also other developing countries, 1 probably due to the fact that the children studied at these daycare centers were younger and came from the poorest families. Also, the cut-off point of 110 g/L is probably too high for infants, thus overestimating the prevalence of anemia in this age group.…”

“…In the present study, although a signifi cant association between CRP with serum ferritin concentration was found, the latter may be underestimated, possibly due to its lower sensitivity as a specifi c marker of iron defi ciency in infants. 10,24 Chronic or recurrent infectious diseases such as malaria and diarrheal diseases can interfere with iron intake, absorption and metabolism. Although diarrhea has declined in Brazil, this reduction has been less pronounced in the Northeastern region.…”

“…Apesar dos coeficientes de correlação demonstrados por este estudo serem baixos, a correlação obtida entre a idade e níveis de ferro (19%), ferritina (12%) e hemoglobina (14%) podem corroborar com os dados do estudo de Vieira et al (2007), que demonstraram correlação positiva de hemoglobina e ferritina com a idade das crianças avaliadas (7).…”

“…3,9,10,19,24 This greater vulnerability might be attributed, mainly, to the accelerated growth and consequent increase in the iron needs in the fi rst years of life. 9 After the sixth month of age, with the end of the iron reserves that were acquired in the uterus, nutrition becomes fundamental to supply the mineral.…”
