The global demographic transition projects an increase in the elderly population by 2050, impacting Brazil. Scientific advances contribute to an epidemiological transition, with an increasing prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes and hypertension. The Home Care Service (SAD), known as the “Better at Home Program”, emerges as an alternative for patients with reduced mobility, with family caregivers playing a crucial role. This research aimed to investigate the challenges faced by caregivers and their coping strategies, based on the Folkman and Lazarus Coping Model. Conducted in Fortaleza-CE, a research used qualitative methods, including sociodemographic questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and the Scale to assess the burden of caregivers of elderly people. The results highlight the burden of caregivers and identify two main coping strategies: problem-focused and emotion-focused, showing how these strategies are adaptive mechanisms in the face of burden. These findings reinforce the importance of supporting caregivers in the context of SAD, emphasizing the need for interventions that promote coping strategies to deal with the challenges associated with home care for patients with NCDs.
