Average spectral power changes at the hippocampal electroencephalogram in schizophrenia model induced by ketamine

Abstract: The use of ketamine (Ket) as a pharmacological model of schizophrenia is an important tool for understanding the main mechanisms of glutamatergic regulated neural oscillations. Thus, the aim of the current study was to evaluate Ket-induced changes in the average spectral power using the hippocampal quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG). To this end, male Wistar rats were submitted to a stereotactic surgery for the implantation of an electrode in the right hippocampus. After three days, the animals were di… Show more

“…There is wide proof that intellectual capacities are related with the synchronized oscillatory action, proposing a useful instrument of neural motions in cortical systems. Notwithstanding its role in typical psychological work, there is developing proof that the changed oscillatory movement may be related to certain neuropsychiatric issues, for example, schizophrenia (28).…”

“…The schizophrenia affects about 1% of the world's population and it is defined as a neuronal syndrome with chronic transgression and disabling characteristics . Its pathophysiology is evidenced by mechanisms that involve neural oxidative imbalance, and it also includes the imbalance of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and glutamate, such imbalances compromise brain function, leading to cell death …”

“…This mental disorder is widely studied in the scientific community using the animal model induced by chronic administration of ketamine, an antagonist drug of the N‐methyl‐ d ‐aspartate receptor (NMDAr), which mimics the pathophysiology of the disease, since there is a decrease in the NMDAr activity at the level of the central nervous system (CNS) …”
