Avian Collagen Is Useful for the Construction of Skin Equivalents

Abstract: As a result of restrictions on animal experimentation, improved skin equivalents (SEs) are needed as alternative test models. This work investigated the effects of avian collagen on the construction of SEs, and to the best of our knowledge is the first study to do so. Hematoxylin and eosin and immunohistochemical staining were used to analyze the SEs. In models containing avian collagen as a dermal equivalent (DE) ingredient, fibroblast proliferation increased by about 60% relative to the control model. Immuno… Show more

“…Increased extracellular matrix (ECM) content increased ΔNp63 in corneal epithelium, whilst collagen synthesis inhibition reduced ΔNp63 levels [200]. Altered p63 levels were also noted in keratinocytes grown on different ECM components [201] and ΔNp63 levels in limbal epithelial stem cells vary according to matrix composition and stiffness [202]. Activating the laminin receptor increased ΔNp63 levels in keratinocytes [203] and integrin‐linked kinase (ILK) inhibition reduced ΔNp63 [204].…”

“…To date, collagen remains the most popular ECM-based biomaterial for dermal matrix biofabrication. These collagens are typically derived from animal sources such as bovine collagen ,, or rat tail collagen. Alternatively, avian collagen, ovine collagen, porcine collagen, , and duck feet collagen are used, albeit to a lesser extent for dermal matrix development. Although human collagen can also be derived from skin biopsies and cadaveric tendons, research into its use in organotypic skin models remain elusive.…”

“…Ca 2+ -influx, mediated by TRPV4, guides various physiological functions, including nociception through pressure-sensing and has a role in the development of functional vascular system 19,24,25 . Additionally, it plays a central role in cell volume regulation by acting as a membrane-stretch-sensing channel upon osmotic changes 26,27 . Besides these physiological functions, TRPV4 seems to be important for the maintenance of epithelial integrity through its role in the regulation of on adherens and tight junction proteins [28][29][30][31][32][33] .…”
