Avian leukosis virus (ALV) is highly prevalent in fancy-chicken flocks in Saxony

Abstract: The current prevalence of avian leukosis virus (ALV) in fancy chickens in Germany is unknown. Therefore, 537 cloacal swabs from 50 purebred fancy-chicken flocks in Saxony were tested for the presence of the ALV p27 protein using a commercial antigen-capture ELISA. The detection rate was 28.7% at the individual-animal level and 56.0% at the flock level. Phylogenetic analysis of PCR products obtained from 22 different flocks revealed the highest similarity to ALV subtype K. When classifying breeds by their origi… Show more

“…ALV is a single-stranded, linear, positive-stranded RNA virus with an entire 7.2 kb segment of the RNA gene, and reverse transcribed genomic RNA that can be used as mRNA-encoded proteins. 26–28 The ALV gene fragments are sequentially 5′R-US-gag-pol-env-U3-R3′. 29 As Fig.…”

“…Several prior epidemiological findings have revealed the global occurrence of ALV infection [ 19 , 20 , 21 ]. As a retrovirus, ALV possesses the capacity to generate genetic diversity and undergo rapid evolution due to its error-prone RNA polymerase and frequent recombination events [ 22 , 23 , 24 ], which makes the prevention and control of the virus much more challenging.…”

“…The disease has various clinical manifestations, including myeloma, lymphoma, hemangioma, and fibrosarcoma [1]. It is a kind of provenance disease that seriously harms the poultry industry worldwide [2]. Since the 1990s, AL has caused significant economic losses to China's chicken industry, especially avian leukosis virus subgroup J (ALV-J) [3].…”
