Avian Metapneumovirus Subgroup C Infection in Chickens, China

Abstract: Avian metapneumovirus causes acute respiratory tract infection and reductions in egg production in various avian species. We isolated and characterized an increasingly prevalent avian metapneumovirus subgroup C strain from meat-type commercial chickens with severe respiratory signs in China. Culling of infected flocks could lead to economic consequences.

“…aMPV was first reported in South Africa in 1980 [3], was subsequently reported in France [4] and the United Kingdom [5] and was recently described worldwide [6][7][8][9]. Based on the antigenicity and genetic characterization, aMPV was further categorized into four subtypes, designated A, B, C and D [10,11].…”

“…It causes acute rhinotracheitis (TRT) in turkeys and swollen head syndrome (SHS) in chickens, leading to serious financial losses [18][19][20]. Since aMPV was first detected in South Africa in 1978 [21], many countries and regions have reported aMPV-infected poultry [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. Based on the classification of hMPV, aMPV strains have been divided into four subtypes, A, B, C, and D (also designated aMPV/A, aMPV/B, aMPV/C, and aMPV/D) [22,[30][31][32].…”
