Avian tibial dyschondroplasia: The interaction of genetic selection and dietary 1,25 ‐dihydroxycholecalciferol

Abstract: SUMMARYThe effects of dietary 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol on the incidence and severity of tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) were assessed in broiler fowl selected for TD (high-TD line) and against TD (low-TD line). Assessment was by examination with a portable Lixiscope to identify lesions in live birds, gross pathology and histopathology. Eighty broilers in four groups of 20 were examined. When fed on standard diets the low-TD line had a 15% incidence whereas the high-TD line had a 63% incidence. The chicks in … Show more

“…A previously reported characteristic of this Low-TD line compared with the High-TD line is a lower rate of growth at 1 and 2 weeks of age, a feature which is followed by a compensatory period of faster growth resulting in no significant difference in body weights at 6 weeks of age (Thorp et al, 1993). The present study with broilers from the high-TD line indicated no significant difference between the mean body weight of male birds with and those without TD.…”

“…The National Institute of Animal Science, Foulum, Denmark used a fast-growing broiler fowl as a base for establishing two experimental lines, designated Low-TD, selected for a low frequency of TD, and High-TD, selected for a high frequency of TD (Thorp et al, 1993). The 117 chicks used in this experiment (27 males and 90 females) were from the High-TD line.…”

“…A zona de cartilagem calcificada foi considerada como o limite inferior para determinação do espessamento da zona hipertrófica, na caracterização da lesão, segundo Ridell (1975) e Thorp et al (1993).…”

“…There are many techniques that may be used to characterize and assess tibial dyschondroplasia. Most of the reported techniques are based on post-mortem examination, from which macroscopic and histological examination are the most frequently used (Cruickshank & Sim, 1986;Thorp, 1992;Thorp et al, 1993;Kuhlers & McDaniel, 1996). Macroscopic examination is the simplest method and consists in visually scoring the dyschondroplastic lesion that is present in the growth plate of the proximal tibial epiphysis.…”
