SUMMARYThe efficacy of Lixiscope examination in detecting tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) is assessed utilising a thorough post-mortem examination with good histological backup. Forty-seven per cent more broilers had TD at post-mortem examination than when examined solely by Lixiscope. TD lesions detected by Lixiscope examination had a mean score greater than 3. The additional lesions detected at post-mortem examination usually had a score of 1. This indicates that the Lixiscope examination failed to detect small lesions. The prevalence of dyschondroplastic lesions in the proximal tarsometatarsi indicates that this site may be of value to score in addition to the proximal tibiotarsus and use in selection. Disruption of the proliferative zone within some dyschondroplastic growth plates indicated that in a proportion of broilers there is a link between TD and rickets. The Lixiscope is an effective tool for detecting large TD lesions, but fails to detect smaller lesions. To minimize the susceptibility of genetic lines of broilers to TD it may be necessary to use progeny testing.

RESUMO -O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o efeito dos ionóforos e balanços eletrolíticos da dieta (BED) no desempenho e na incidência de discondroplasia tibial (DT) em frangos de corte de 1 a 21 dias de idade. Foram utilizados 1.600 pintos de corte, machos, "Cobb", distribuídos em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial com três níveis de BED (230, 260 e 290 mEq/ kg) e dois ionóforos (lasalocida e salinomicina), mais dois tratamentos controle (230 e 260 mEq/kg), isentos de ionóforos, totalizando oito tratamentos, quatro repetições e 50 aves por unidade experimental. Verificou-se interação entre ionóforos e balanços para o peso aos 21 dias (P21) e consumo de ração (CR). Desdobrando essa interação, observou-se que, com a utilização de lasalocida, houve comportamento quadrático, em função do BED para o P21 e CR, sendo os valores mínimos para essas variáveis obtidos com 261 e 268 mEq/kg, respectivamente. Quando se utilizou salinomicina, não houve efeito do BED. A conversão alimentar (CA) não sofreu influência dos ionóforos e do BED. Na comparação utilizando contrastes, constatou-se melhor P21 das aves com a adição de ionóforos às dietas, todavia, para o CR e CA não foram encontradas diferenças. Na comparação entre ionóforos, as aves que receberam salinomicina apresentaram peso superior àquelas que receberam lasalocida. O uso de salinomicina não mostrou efeito do BED sobre as áreas epifisárias, entretanto, com o uso do lasalocida, o incremento do BED proporcionou aumento linear dessas áreas. Concluiuse que o uso de dietas com lasalocida reduziram o desempenho dos frangos, sendo que as aves que receberam salinomicina apresentaram maior P21 e não sofreram influência do BED na incidência de DT. This study was carried out at Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Botucatu, SP, Brazil, with the objective of evaluating the efficacy of four techniques in the assessment of tibial dyschondroplasia lesions in broiler chickens. Four hundred Cobb male chicks were reared from 1 to 39 days of age. At 39 days, forty birds were selected and tibial dyschondroplasia status was assessed by four different techniques: evaluation using the lixiscope, macroscopic examination, histological examination and bone mineral density assessment using optical radiographic densitometry. The efficacy of each technique to assess dyschondroplasia lesions in the tibial growth plate was determined in comparison to histology, which was considered to be 100% efficient. The correlation results between lixiscope analysis and histology were poor. Macroscopic scores and densitometry readings were highly correlated with histology scores, and it is considered that these techniques reliably reproduce the status of the growth plate
