Awareness and Use of Sustainable Land Management Practices in Smallholder Farming Systems

Bridget Bwalya,
Edward Mutandwa,
Brian Chanda Chiluba

Abstract: Sustainable land management (SLM) practices are often touted as a vehicle for simultaneously increasing agricultural productivity and food security in rural areas. In Eastern Zambia, numerous initiatives such as the Zambia Integrated Forest Landscape Project (ZIFLP) have been implemented. Yet, empirical data suggest relatively low levels of SLM uptake in the smallholder farming sector. Therefore, the broad objective of this study was to estimate the relationship between smallholder farmer awareness of SLM tech… Show more

“…Farmers' familiarity, ease of use, and alignment with traditional practices also play a crucial role in adoption decisions (Olum et al, 2020). Education, awareness programs, community engagement, and demonstration plots are crucial in shaping farmers' attitudes towards mulching (Bwalya et al, 2023). Adoptability of SECM depends on environmental factors such as soil type, climate, topography, and land use practices (Iqbal et al, 2020).…”

“…To further reduce soil disturbance and preserve soil organic matter, conservation tillage techniques, reduced tillage intensity, and promotion of sustainable land use practices are all part of soil conservation practices. 26 , 27 Because GM techniques increase the resilience and adaptability of endangered plant species, they are vital to plant conservation efforts. For example, genetically modified (GeMo) plants are able to flourish in a variety of challenging environments by introducing genes that provide resistance to pests, diseases, and environmental stressors.…”
