The aim of this study was to determine the knowledge and understanding of glaucoma amongst final year medical and nursing students and to subjectively assess their perception of basic eye examination skills. This was a cross sectional survey using a self-administered pre-tested questionnaire. A total of 238 students with a mean age of 23.2 years, comprising of 102 (42.9%) medical and 136 (57.1%) nursing students took the survey. Almost all the participants had heard about glaucoma with four out of five participants knowing there is treatment for glaucoma. One hundred and sixty-five (69.3%) felt their exposure to basic eye examination was inadequate and this affected their overall confidence in carrying out eye examinations. In conclusion, the soon to be medical professionals had a good knowledge and understanding of glaucoma, however there was a poor level of confidence towards carrying out basic eye examination which needs to be addressed in the current teaching curriculum.

Introduction: Glaucoma is an irreversible blinding disease that occurs due to the damage of the optic nerve caused by increased intraocular pressure. Early diagnosis, treatment, and patient understanding within the community is crucial to prevent further damage and for the preservation of vision. This study aimed to determine the level of awareness and knowledge of glaucoma and its determinant among UiTM health sciences students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among health sciences students at the UiTM Puncak Alam campus. A validated self-administrated questionnaire consisted of three sections with 22 questions was randomly distributed to students as part of data collection. Results: Out of 380 respondents, 61.3% were aware of glaucoma, and most had good knowledge of it. The glaucoma awareness and knowledge were significantly associated with age (p<0.005), the programme of study (p<0.01), and having family members with glaucoma (p<0.05). Conclusion: Even though the respondent’s level of awareness was moderate, their knowledge regarding glaucoma was high. This indicates that respondents who were aware of glaucoma had good basic knowledge. There is a need to raise glaucoma awareness and knowledge among health sciences students, as many were still unaware of the eye disease.

Pengetahuan akan glaukoma sangatlah penting untuk mahasiswa kedokteran, selain kelak untuk penegakan diagnosis dan tatalaksana awal saat menjadi dokter umum. Insiden glaukoma telah meningkat pesat dalam dekade terakhir dengan peningkatan dan usia penduduk. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat pengetahuan glaukoma pada mahasiswa kepaniteraan FKIK UKRIDA angkatan 2020. Merupakan studi deskriptif, dengan pendekatan cross-sectional. dengan menggunakan metode total sampling. Mahasiswa yang memiliki pengetahuan cukup/sedang (65,1%) yang di dapatkan sebagian besar secara lisan dari perkuliaan dan beberapa juga didapatkan dengan membaca literature ataupun textbook. Tidak ada perbandingan khusus usia mahasiswa mempengaruhi tingkat pengetahuan tentang glaukoma. Responden yang berusia 22 tahun hingga 29 tahun, memiliki tingkat pengetahuan bervariasi dari tingkat pengetahuan sedang dan baik. Sedangkan berdasarkan jenis kelamin sebagian besar perempuan memiliki tingkat pengetahuan yang baik (39,7%) dibandingkan laki-laki (25,4%). Dalam penelitian ini, distribusi responden berusia 26 tahun (22,2%) dan responden berjenis kelamin perempuan (63,5%). Dari hasil penelitian disimpulkan bahwa responden dengan tingkat pengetahuan sedang yaitu 65,1%. Diperlukan jumlah responden yang lebih banyak dan cakupan mahasiswa yang lebih luas untuk penelitian selanjutnya.
