Awareness, Perceptions, and Expectations of Academic Librarians in Turkey aboutResource Description and Access(RDA)

Abstract: Resource Description and Access (RDA), as a new cataloging standard, supports libraries in their bibliographic description processes by increasing access points. The increasing importance of RDA implementation requires adaptation to a new bibliographic universe. Furthermore, many initiatives have been launched by countries who would like to keep themselves up-to-date by using and implementing RDA in their library catalogs. This study points out the awareness and expectations of catalogers in academic libraries… Show more

“…A number of individual institutions related their own adoption decisions, several national surveys reported on issues faced in their countries, and studies of how RDA was being implemented in specific types of libraries were conducted. 26 Perhaps not surprisingly, training continued to be an area of great concern, particularly the attendant costs, as several authors commented on the continuing need for affordable education options. 27 Consequently, many institutions relied heavily on LC's free training materials.…”

“…Fabian pointed out that the development of RDA has evolved to be 'a continuous exchange of ideas' which could be used as a basis for cooperative work when developing other kinds of international library standards (Fabian, 2016: 339). Other articles that provide a broader context include an examination of the awareness of RDA of academic libraries in Turkey (Atılgan et al, 2014) and an overview of the current cataloguing rules in Slovenia where a wait-and-see approach was taken until more international institutions start following the standard (Kanic, 2014).…”

“…This was regardless of whether they are early adopters, such as Germany and the Netherlands, have only expressed interest, such as Bulgaria and Serbia, or have chosen an alternative to an RDA implementation, such as Poland and France. Some of the countries, such as Turkey, Latvia and Germany, have either catalogued in AACR2 or considered the adoption of AACR2 prior to the development of RDA, thus an adoption seemed to be a natural progression (Atılgan et al, 2014;Behrens et al, 2014;Goldberga et al, 2014). Table 2 shows what rules were used in Europe prior to RDA (Behrens et al, 2014;Goldberga et al, 2014;Kanic, 2014;Kieffer, 2012;O'Dwyer, 2013;Willer and Barbaric, 2012).…”
