Axion-like particles and the propagation of gamma rays over astronomical distances

Abstract: In this mini-review, possible manifestations of mixing between axion-like particles (ALPs) and energetic photons propagating over astronomical distances are considered. We discuss the evidence for the anomalous transparency of the Universe from observations of ensembles of distant gamma-ray sources, present the general formalism for the ALP-photon mixing and explain how this mechanism may remove the anomaly. We present relevant values of ALP parameters and discuss future ways to verify the scenario and to disc… Show more

“…The same range of couplings is favoured by ALP explanations of possible "anomalous transparency" effects [6,7,8,9,10] in the propagation of energetic gamma rays from distant sources [11,12,13,14,15,16,17] (for a short review, see Ref. [18]). These studies are however very sensitive to measurements of redshifts of the emitting sources, so the significance of the observed effects remains uncertain [19] and other ways to explore the relevant part of the ALP parameter space are welcome.…”

“…The discussion of the possibility of such a significant reduction required a detailed analysis of the physical factors accounting for EBL formation. The alternative explanations of the anomalous transparency of the Universe include new physics with the hypothetical axionlike particles, see Troitsky (2017), De Angelis et al (2007), Simet et al (2008), Fairbairn et al (2011) for a review and new astrophysics Essey & Kusenko (2010), Dzhatdoev et al (2017). In the latter class of models it is assumed that addi-tional high-energy gamma-rays are produced as the secondaries in the cascades, initiated by the gamma-rays or the ultra-high-energy protons emitted at the same sources.…”

“…Refs. [15,[21][22][23] for recent reviews. A range of approaches are based on the ALP-photon mixing in external magnetic fields [24], which results in the ALP-photon oscillations, the ALP Primakoff effect and vacuum birefringence.…”
