“…However, hippocampal volumes are not consistently reduced in other UHR studies-including those imaged at 3 T (Stone et al, 2009)-which suggests that although hippocampal volumes may be reduced in UHR populations, they are not related to transition nor the risk syndrome itself (or if volume is reduced, it is only in subregions (Witthaus et al, 2010)). Reductions in hippocampal volume have been reported in a number of psychiatric disorders, notably major depression (McKinnon et al, 2009), which is very common in UHR cohorts (eg Svirskis et al, 2005). There may also be an association with the proportion of each sample that have a family history of schizophrenia (Boos et al, 2007), although in our own work we do not find this-rather, we found that those with a positive family history tended to have preserved hippocampal volume .…”
