The article considers the use of sport in the country pavilions during Expo 2020 in Dubai. Many states have increasingly used sport to improve their international reputation. Through hosting a sporting event or achieving a high level of sport, governments can attempt to affect how the foreign public perceives their country. Such undertakings have traditionally taken place at sporting environments. However, sport, considered a soft power asset, can also be used to promote states during a non-sporting event. The research aimed to study if and how states use sport to promote themselves during such non-sporting events, by the example of Expo 2020 in Dubai. The research aims to respond to the research question about how sport may be used to promote countries during Expo, with the goal to identify the main themes through which sport-related activities and assets were used and whether they had an overriding or a minor role in promoting a state. The main argument presented in the article is that the use of sport in shaping the international image of a state can also take the form of showcasing sport-related assets at a non-sporting event.

In March 2017, Georgian citizens were able to travel visa-free to the Schengen Area. This development was highly significant to Georgia, whose narrative of “belonging to Europe” has long contrasted with the travel restrictions for Georgian citizens, who were previously required to undergo complicated consular procedures. However, this was far from being a routine bilateral negotiation. Visa disparities mirrored the contractual asymmetry between Tbilisi and Brussels. This article focuses on how Georgia calibrated its political discourse vis-à-vis the European Union. After outlining both the symbolic and political relevance of visa liberalization, this work assesses the Georgian political rhetoric at different times: in 2005, when Georgia unilaterally lifted visa requirements for Western visitors, and in 2015 and 2016, when visa liberalization was widely expected. The article’s theoretical framework and the final conclusions are relevant to the study of visa regimes and the external relations of small states.

Black America is not present, as it should be, in the literature on US soft power. This paper argues that Black culture exerts a powerful positive attraction abroad. This attraction, grounded in the forms of Black resistance to racial injustice, leads to a reconceptualization of America’s identity, by foreign audiences. A counter claim of what counts as “America” takes shape. The rethinking of America’s identity abroad responds to the appeal of the legacy of Black resistance. However, Black culture is, more often, unavailable to policymakers for garnering desired outcomes. Incorporating Black culture into the study of soft power helps sharpen the concept’s definition and points to when and why some forms of soft power are unavailable to decision makers.
