Azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons, pions, and kaons produced in deep-inelastic scattering off unpolarized protons and deuterons

Abstract: The azimuthal cos φ and cos 2φ modulations of the distribution of hadrons produced in unpolarized semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of electrons and positrons off hydrogen and deuterium targets have been measured in the Hermes experiment. For the first time these modulations were determined in a four-dimensional kinematic space for positively and negatively charged pions and kaons separately, as well as for unidentified hadrons. These azimuthal dependences are sensitive 2 to the transverse motion and po… Show more

“…Here, we will just briefly summarize the main data available and then try to sort out the available TMD parameterizations. For SIDIS, measurements have been made by the HERMES Collaboration [66][67][68][69][70] at DESY, the COM-PASS Collaboration [71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78] at CERN, CLAS [79,80], and the Hall A Collaboration [81][82][83][84] at Jefferson Laboratory (JLab). We list these SIDIS experiments in Table 5 and briefly summarize the results as follows.…”

“…The Collins effect has been observed in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering experiments (SIDIS) where it arises from the product of a Collins FF and a chiral-odd transversity parton distribution function (PDF) [2,3,4,5]. Extraction of the Collins FF and the transversity PDF requires an independent measurement.…”

“…However, each of the above processes can produce Fig. 11 cos 2φ amplitudes for positive (upper panels) and negative (lower panels) pions measured by the HERMES Collaboration [112]. Closed and open squares are for amplitudes extracted from hydrogen and deuterium targets, respectively.…”

“…The first measurement of the cos 2φ asymmetry was performed by the EMC Collaboration at the energy The cos 2φ asymmetry of π + production in electroproduction on the proton was also searched by CLAS [113]. Several years ago, for the first time, the cos 2φ asymmetries in a four-dimensional kinematic space (x, y, z, and P T ) for positively and negatively charged pions and kaons separately, as well as for unidentified hadrons, were measured by the HER-MES Collaboration [112], with 27.6 GeV electrons and positrons scattered off unpolarized hydrogen and deuterium targets. An example of the HERMES measurement is given in Fig.…”
