Cytodiagnosis of cutaneous basal and squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: Cytologic examination is easy to perform, saves time, provides a rapid diagnosis, and can be considered, under experienced hands, reliable in the confirmation of malignant skin tumors. Cytology does not give much information about tumor patterns or subtypes which can be related to aggressive behavior and can be very important in further therapeutic decisions. Therefore, histopathologic confirmation is mandatory before any therapeutic maneuver.

“…Furthermore, cytological analysis has proved reliable in the intraoperative evaluation of lung and mediastinal lesions [17], salivary gland tumors [18][19][20], parathyroid lesions [21] and brain malignancies [22]. There are a few studies in the literature concerning the use of cytology in evaluating cutaneous malignant tumors [23][24][25]. This study provides evidence that cytological analysis is a reliable, accurate and sensitive method of identifying malignant cutaneous lesions developing in chronic wounds and pathologic scars.…”

“…Sitolojik incelemede dar sitoplazmalı bazaloid hücrelerin oluşturduğu bazal hücre adacıklarının görülmesi bazal hücreli karsinoma için oldukça duyarlı (%97-100) ve özgün bir bulgudur (Resim 5a) (16,17). Sitolojik incelemeler bazal hücreli karsinomanın tanısı yanında cerrahi sınır tayini için de kullanılabilir (18).…”

“…This can lead to difficulty, as seen for instance in cytology. Vega-Memije et al (83) introduced Papanicolaou staining to successfully distinguish between the two carcinoma types, and this was also used by Christensen et al (84) along with May-Grünwald-Giemsa staining for the cytological differentiation of BCCs and actinic keratosis. Tellechea et al (85) used immunohistochemical anti-Ber-EP4 monoclonal antibody.…”
