B‐Flow and B‐Mode Ultrasound Imaging in Carotid Fibromuscular Dysplasia

Abstract: Morphological arterial wall changes of FMD were well depicted by careful B-flow and B-mode imaging of the distal internal carotid artery. We would like to emphasize the utility of B-flow and B-mode in the noninvasive evaluation of FMD.

“…BFl, introduced more than 20 years ago, so far has been applied in a variety of indications, including the assessment of transplant vascularization (e.g., kidney transplants) and the dignity assessment of thyroid nodules. Studies with a focus on vascular pathologies aimed on grading of carotid stenosis [ 15 , 16 ] and on detection of cervical artery dissection and fibromuscular dysplasia [ 17 , 18 ]. A single study evaluated the diagnostic value of BFl for assessment of the lower extremity arteries and bypass grafts in patients with peripheral arterial disease [ 19 ].…”

“…BFI, introduced more than 20 years ago, so far has been applied in a variety of indications, including assessment of transplant vascularization (e.g., kidney transplants) and dignity assessment of thyroid nodules. Studies with a focus on vascular pathologies aimed on grading of carotid stenosis (14,15) and detection of cervical artery dissection and fibromuscular dysplasia (16,17). A single study evaluated the diagnostic value of BFI for assessment of the lower extremity arteries and bypass grafts in patients with peripheral arterial disease (18).…”

“…Therefore, B-flow has significant advantages in diagnosing vascular lesions. 24,25 In the area of PSA with a high flow velocity (such as artery rupture), the color bleed artifact is often present in the CDFI imaging. 26 In the low-velocity areas of PSA, the blood flow could not be fully displayed by CDFI due to the angle limitation.…”
