Laparoscopic gonadectomy in a patient with androgen insensitivity syndrome: an extracorporeal surgical technique

Abstract

Because of the increased risk of gonadal malignancy, prophylactic gonadectomy in androgen insensitivity syndrome has recently been performed using laparoscopic procedures. However, the intracorporeal approach, as a standard technique, is often time consuming, complicated and expensive. Here we describe a simple extracorporeal technique as an alternative method. This method is only suitable for some intraperitoneal gonads and adequate exclusion of gonads in the inguinal canal must occur. Several advantages and disadvantages of this procedure are discussed.
