Quality of life and experiences of sarcoma trajectories (the QUEST study): protocol for an international observational cohort study on diagnostic pathways of sarcoma patients

Abstract: IntroductionSarcomas are rare tumours with considerable heterogeneity. Early and accurate diagnosis is important to optimise patient outcomes in terms of local disease control, overall survival (OS) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Time to diagnosis is variable in bone as well as soft tissue sarcoma. Possible factors for a long time from first symptom to diagnosis (the total interval) include patient, tumour and healthcare characteristics, but until now the most relevant risk factors and its associa… Show more

“…It would be interesting to be able to point out the first symptom, related to the sarcoma, that caused the patient to consult a doctor. In one of our future studies using the prospective, longitudinal QUality of life and Experiences of Sarcoma Trajectories (QUEST) data, we will examine whether, and if so which, specific delays in intervals are related to poor clinical outcomes and worse HRQoL 35 . Herein, we also have information with what symptom the patient decided to consult a HCP and if present, the rationale behind delaying the consultation.…”

“…4,20 Quantifying the potential negative impact of a prolonged diagnostic trajectory on patient outcomes through the integration of EHR data (eg, clinical outcomes such as overall survival [OS]) with the growing collection of PRO data (eg, diaries or social media platforms) in daily clinical practice can provide valuable insights into groups at risk. 28,29 Other RWD sources that could be valuable for research on sarcoma diagnostics include histology and tumor molecular data (to reduce misdiagnosis) and hospital data (to create symptom signatures). Furthermore, within clinical practice, imaging plays a crucial role in diagnosis and treatment decisions.…”
