B-type natriuretic peptide levels and volume status in twice-weekly hemodialysis patients

Abstract: Background Twice-weekly hemodialysis (HD) could be regarded as an important part of incremental hemodialysis, volume status of this treatment model remains to be elucidated. Methods Patients undergoing regular twice-weekly or thrice-weekly hemodialysis in our unit on June 2015 were enrolled into the cohort study with an average of 2.02 years follow-up. Volume status of the subjects was evaluated by clinical characteristics, plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels… Show more

“…In a recent study, serum BNP levels were investigated according to the volume status of hemodialysis patients, and a significant decrease was found in serum BNP levels in patients who received hemodialysis three times per week compared to those who received treatment two times per week [27]. The study's authors report that the volume status was worse in those who received dialysis twice weekly and that BNP levels were a strong predictor of mortality in hemodialysis patients.…”

“…As interest in this field has increased, several clinical trials have been performed to further evaluate outcomes in patients undergoing incremental dialysis ( Table 2 ). 2 , 5 , 28 , 34 , 36–50 Preservation of RKF has been demonstrated in several observational cohort studies. In 2014, a cohort of 85 patients from Shanghai was evaluated where 30 patients initiated twice weekly hemodialysis for 6 months or longer, and 55 patients were started and maintained on thrice weekly hemodialysis treatment.…”

“…Variation of BNP may re ect volume load and simultaneously evaluate cardiac function, which may be a more relevant predictor for patient outcome. However, previous studies provided inconsistent threshold of BNP in hemodialysis patients, and were lack observation for prognosis [14,15]. In this study, we used blood pressure and BIS methods to de ne the normal volume status of hemodialysis patients, analyzed the relatively normal distribution of BNP expression, and explored the relationship between the shift in BNP levels and prognosis of hemodialysis patients.…”
