B7-H4 as an independent prognostic indicator of cancer patients: a meta-analysis

Abstract: The expression of B7-H4 was observed in a variety of tumors, however the prognostic value in cancer was still controversial. Therefore, we conducted this meta-analysis to explore the potential role of B7-H4 in cancer prognostic prediction. Twenty-seven studies including 3771 patients were brought into the analysis according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The pooled results demonstrated that elevated B7-H4 predicted a poor OS (HR = 1.93, 95% CI 1.71-2.18, P < 0.001) and DFS (HR = 1.84, 95% CI 1.46-2.3… Show more

“…33 B7H4 is highly expressed by the majority of human cancers. 34 It has been shown that in PC patients, the expression of B7H1 has an association with tumor size, whereas the expression of B7H4 has associations with tumor size, lymph node metastasis, and depth of invasion. 18 In this metaanalysis, we found that the higher expression of B7H1 or B7H4 was significantly associated with lesser OS.…”

“…B7-H4 protein is not detected in most healthy tissues but is widely expressed in various cancers. In some types of malignancies, it is associated with adverse clinical features and unfavorable prognoses [ 23 ]. Chen et al investigated B7-H4 protein in precancerous lesions of the esophagus and found it highly expressed in 9.1% of normal tissues, 40.7% of low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia, and 81.0% of high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia.…”

“…Moreover, as the number of studies was limited at that time, they are based on results from mixed methods of estimating B7H4 expression (ELISA, IHC) and sources of B7H4 expression (tissue, homogenates, blood sera) [24]. Additionally, some included different methods of prognosis estimation, such as the odds ratio (OR), rate ratio (RR), and hazard ratio (HR), to conduct the meta-analysis [25]. Furthermore, most studies were focused on the overall survival (OS) parameter, and two studies also evaluated disease-free survival (DFS) [25,26].…”
