Back Cover: Design of a Silver–Cerium Dioxide Core–Shell Nanocomposite Catalyst for Chemoselective Reduction Reactions (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 1/2012)

Abstract: The chemoselective reduction … … of epoxides to the corresponding alkenes occurs in the presence of an Ag-CeO 2 nanoparticle core-shell nanocomposite (AgNPs@CeO 2 , represented as the moon orbiting the earth) and H 2 . In their Communication on page 136 ff., K. Kaneda and co-workers report how the chemoselective reaction, which can also be applied to nitrostyrenes, proceeds more efficiently with AgNPs@CeO 2 than with conventional oxide-supported metal nanoparticles.

“…Ag@CeO 2 core@shell nanospheres were prepared according to a previous report except for some modication. 16,17 Here, we increase the molar ratio of Ce/Ag from 2/3 to 1/1 so as to realize a more compact encapsulation of CeO 2 on Ag cores. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images in Fig.…”

“…The key principle during the synthesis should be the auto-redox reaction by activating Ce 3+ ions to reduce the high-valence-state noble metal ions, spontaneously forming the nal noble metal@CeO 2 core@shell hybrid nanostructures. 7,[15][16][17] For example, Kayama and coworkers reported good work on Ag@CeO 2 nanospheres for a catalytic CO oxidation reaction. 16,17 Before long, our group also succeeded in modulating the size of Pt@CeO 2 (ref.…”
