Fluorinated poly(aryl ether oxadiazole), synthesized by the copolymerization of 2,5-bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole and diallylbisphenol A, was used as the main polymer chain (MP). 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid (taurine) was attached to brominated-MPs (Br-MPs) at mild conditions, serving as both cation and anion exchange groups. AIEM-0.6, AIEM-1.4 and AIEM-2.0 were obtained via solution-casting method. Quantum calculation and experiments verified the selective permeability of the membranes: high proton conductivities and low vanadium permeation parameters. Also the AIEMs demonstrate good acid resistance and thermal stability, showing potential in vanadium redox flow battery (VFB) fields.Vadanium redox flow batteries (VFBs) are attracting increasing attention in the energy storage fields. By using V 2+ /V 3+ and VO 2+ /VO 2 + couples as anode and cathode, the open circuit voltage (OCV) of VFBs can achieve 1.60 V when the state of charge (SOC) is 100%. Ionic exchange membranes (IEMs) play important roles in VFBs. IEMs allow the transfer of the protons to complete the circuit while preventing the crossing over of the vanadium ions. Currently used proton exchange membranes (PEMs) do not show enough selectivity between protons and vanadium ions, 1,2 which causes the penetration of vanadium ions and self-discharge of the VFBs.Amphoteric ion exchange membranes (AIEMs), which have cation groups in polymer backbones, can prevent the crossing over of vanadium ions while maintaining an acceptable proton conductivity (σ). To this date, AIEMs have been mainly created through radiation grafting. 3-6 Under appropriate radiation conditions, the properties of target membranes can be easily controlled, so as to realize a balance between a satisfying σ and a low enough vanadium permeation parameter. In this work, we reported an environmental friendly chemical modification method to obtain AIEMs. The nontoxic 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid (taurine) was used as both cation and anion exchange groups. The functionalization step was completed in one step at mild conditions. Quantum calculations were applied to evaluate the selective permeability between vanadium and hydronium ions when they cross AIEMs. Compared to Nafion 115, these AIEMs show better performance in VFBs fields.
ExperimentalAIEMs synthesis.-The detailed description of the synthesis of main polymer chain (FPAEO, MP) and bromination of MP is reported in supplementary materials (SM). Different amount of N-Bromosuccinimide (NBS) were reacted with MP to obtain brominated MP (Br-MP-x, x = 0.6, 1.4, 2.0) with different bromide ratio (BR, bromine per repeating unit). 1.5 mmol Br-MP-x and taurine (0.9, 2.1, 3,0 mmol, respectively) were reacted in 25 mL N,NDimethylmethanamide (DMF) at room temperature for 24 h. The membranes were prepared by solution-casting method by pouring the reaction solution onto a glass plate and heated at 60 • C for 24 h. The degrees of functionalization (DOF) were calculated from 1 H-NMR spectra by methods reported by Hu, et al 7 (Table S1).
