Backpackers’ experiences with smartphones usage in Ghana

Abstract: Mobile phones have become an important constituent of backpackers' travel experiences-reconstructing their ideology and sociality in the virtual world. Though backpacking is increasingly becoming popular in Africa, it remains unexplored in that context. “…The thematic analysis technique was used to identify, analyse and report patterns from the interviews and this was guided by the study objectives. According to Dayour (2019), thematic analysis is a fundamental technique in the analysis and presentation of qualitative data mainly because it is flexible and does not restrict itself to any philosophical thought. The thematic analysis undertaken in this study modelled on the analysis approach proposed by Thomas (2006): data preparation and close reading of text to become familiar with the raw data; development of categories from the raw data into a model or framework (coding the data); searching for themes and recognising relationships (i.e.…”

“…Geographically, Cape Coast and Elmina were chosen because they are geographically adjacent in terms of settlement and development. Also, they hold and receive the greatest number of attractions and tourist arrivals due to their diversity of attractions, which include historical, ecological and cultural attractions (Dayour, 2014). The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) categorizes hotels as 1-Star, 2-Star, 3-Star, Budget and Guest House.…”

“…Basically, the transcripts from the interviews were analysed using the procedure as suggested by Saunders et al (2016): becoming familiar with the dataset; doing the coding; examining themes; recognising relationships and refining themes. Finally, the 'member check' method was used to validate the results by contacting four of the respondents, that is, one from each FGD session to validate them (Dayour, 2019).…”

“…For the FGD sessions, the maximum variation sampling which allows a researcher to vary the sample based on diverse attributes such as age and sex in order to provide diversity in the data was considered in selecting participants (Saunders, Lewis, & Thornhill, 2016). FGD and IDI guides containing open-ended questions and pre-scripted probes were used in the process of data collection (Dayour, 2019). Furthermore, conditional and spontaneous probes were not left out in carrying out these sessions in the study.…”
