Bacterial and mycotic otological infections in Singapore

Abstract: SUMMARYThis paper describes a microbiological study of 84 young adult men with clinical otitic infections. Gram-negative aerobic bacilli were frequently isolated from these patients diagnosed as having otitis externa or chronic suppurative otitis media, of which Pseudomonas species predominated.Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis and aerobic Corynebacterium species (diphtheroids) were also found. About 40 % of ear infections were attributed to otomycoses, chiefly from Aspergillus species and Candida parapsil… Show more

“…family; the literature data [5, 9–12] indicate that these fungi are causal to otomycosis in 1–38% of cases, although Mugliston and O'Donoghue [13] and Nielsen [14] report even higher rates – as many as 41–58% of patients. Aspergillus spp., on the other hand, are in the opinion of most authors [6–8, 15–19] responsible for diseases of the ear in 51–98% of patients.…”

“…P aeruginosa is the most common pathogen in chronic suppurative otitis media, both with and without cholesteatoma. 74–89 As far more mastoidectomies are performed for chronic suppurative otitis media than acute otitis media, P aeruginosa is likely to be among the most common pathogens to be present when a semicircular canal is violated. 38 In contrast to S pneumoniae , P aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen, causing disease only in the presence of some breakdown in normal defense systems or barriers.…”
