Bacterial antagonism in host-associated microbial communities

Abstract: Antagonistic interactions are abundant in microbial communities and contribute not only to the composition and relative proportions of their members but also to the longer-term stability of a community. This Review will largely focus on bacterial antagonism mediated by ribosomally synthesized peptides and proteins produced by members of host-associated microbial communities. We discuss recent findings on their diversity, functions, and ecological impacts. These systems play key roles in ecosystem defense, path… Show more

“…Accordingly, the expression of Bcl-6, a transcription factor essential for the differentiation and function of Tfh cells (22), was also significantly reduced (Fig. 3, F Commensal microbes calibrate immune responses in large part by producing small molecules that mediate host-microbial interactions (23,24). Thus, we explored the immunomodulatory properties of salivaricins, the key anti-competitor or signaling molecules mediating the benefits of S. salivarius (18).…”

“…Strains with insertions of pNBU2 were selected for matching integration sites by PCR with primers flanking att loci (46). Interbacterial competitions between strains of B. fragilis occasionally exhibited T6SS-independent phenotypes that were dependent on the initial starting ratio of the strains used (47).…”

“…Coevolutionary theories are now well developed and have been applied in many fields, such as cosmology (Heckman and Kauffmann, 2011;Martin-Navarro et al, 2018;Wu et al, 2015). Sociology (Henrich et al, 2006), computer science (Liu and Lu, 2015), biology (Bottery et al, 2019;Chen et al, 2020;Cross et al, 2019;Garcia-Bayona and Comstock, 2018), biomedicine (Bottery et al, 2017;Loftie-Eaton et al, 2016;Single et al, 2007), and molecular biology (Barreto et al, 2018;Jin et al, 2017b;Lord et al, 2019;Mann et al, 2016). The interactions between promoters and transcription factors (TFs) are the beginning of gene transcription, and it has been acknowledged that such interactions are vital for transcription regulation and could affect all stages of cell lifecycle (Mirny, 2010).…”
