Bacterial blotch of melons caused by strains of Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli

Abstract: The watermelon fruit blotch organism (Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli) was confirmed as the cause of a bacterial disease of rockmelon seedlings in January 1996. Further outbreaks occurred in commercial nurseries during 1996–98. An associated field disease was not observed in rockmelon and honeydew crops until May 1998 when wet conditions led to severe leaf spotting and fruit infection in many crops in the Burdekin district of North Queensland. Isolates of A. avenae subsp. citrulli originating from these outb… Show more

“…The disease started to gain importance after severe outbreaks in watermelon fields in the USA during the late 1980s/early 1990s (Wall and Santos 1988;Wall et al 1990;Somodi et al 1991). Since then, BFB has been reported in other cucurbits, such as melon, pumpkin and cucumber, and has spread to many parts of the world, including the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Australia (Isakeit et al 1997(Isakeit et al , 1998Langston et al 1999;Martin and O'Brien 1999;O'Brien and Martin 1999;Schaad et al 2003;Walcott et al 2004;Burdman et al 2005).…”

“…Bacterial fruit blotch of melon by Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli has been reported, but it causes water-soaking with a reddish-brown discoloration on the surface and in internal tissue of fruits (Horita et al 2006;O'Brien and Martin 1999;Tomita et al 2006). None of these reports mentioned an internal rot of melon fruits caused by bacteria.…”

“…Strains of A. avenae subsp. citrulli have been divided into at least two groups on the basis of pathogenicity on different hosts, DNA fingerprinting and other bacteriological properties including fatty acid composition: one includes strains more associated with watermelon; the other mainly consists of those isolated from nonwatermelon hosts (Burdman et al 2005;Feng et al 2009;O'Brien and Martin 1999;Walcott et al , 2004. Kawicha et al (2002) additionally reported that the subspecies has further diversity in their pathogenicity and disease severity.…”
