Bacterial disease resistance of transgenic hybrid poplar expressing the synthetic antimicrobial peptide D4E1

Abstract: Important losses in poplar productivity occur because of susceptibility to microbial pathogens. To enhance disease resistance in susceptible genotypes, the gene coding for D4E1, a synthetic antimicrobial peptide consisting of 17 amino acid residues, was introduced into poplar (Populus tremula L. x Populus alba L.) via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Four kanamycin-resistant transformants were selected based on significant accumulation of the D4E1 transcript and confirmed by reverse transcription-polymer… Show more

“…Transgenic plants from a Populus tremula L. x P. alba L. hybrid that expressed the D4E1 peptide showed a decrease in symptom severity for diseases caused by Agrobacterium tumefaciens and Xanthomonas populi pv. populi (Mentag et al, 2003). The genetic transformation of tobacco with a gene encoding the synthetic antimicrobial peptide D4E1 controlled the growth of Aspergillus flavus and Verticillium dahliae fungi (Cary et al, 2000); whereas the D4E1 gene expression in cotton plants reduced disease symptoms caused by Thielaviopsis basicola (Rajasekaran et al, 2005).…”

“…Furthermore, poplar trees transformed with a gene encoding synthetic peptide D4E1 were found to be resistant to bacterial pathogens Agrobacterium tumefaciens and Xanthomonas populi (Ridé) van den Mooter & Swings but not to the fungal pathogen Hypoxylon mammatum (Wahlenb.) P. Karst [46].…”

“…Sugarcane transformation by detoxifying agents degraded toxins and provided resistance against various pathogens (Zhang et al, 1999). A synthetic peptide named D4E1 was introduced in cotton and poplar, providing resistance against Thielaviopsis basicola fungus in cotton (Rajasekaran et al, 2007) and some bacteria in poplar (Mentag et al, 2003;Montesinos, 2007). Apple was transformed with a grapevine gene stilbene synthase that codes for a phytoalexin, namely resveratrol, found in grapevine but absent in apples.…”
