Abstract:Fossilized sterols, or steranes, are broadly interpreted as biomarkers for past eukaryotic life. Steranes with side chain methylations can act as more specific eukaryotic biomarkers given the limited taxonomic distribution of their sterol precursors in extant eukaryotes.
