Bacteriocin production: a relatively unharnessed probiotic trait?

Abstract: Probiotics are “live microorganisms which, when consumed in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit to the host”. A number of attributes are highly sought after among these microorganisms, including immunomodulation, epithelial barrier maintenance, competitive exclusion, production of short-chain fatty acids, and bile salt metabolism. Bacteriocin production is also generally regarded as a probiotic trait, but it can be argued that, in contrast to other traits, it is often considered a feature that is desirab… Show more

“…While their potential in applications has so far mostly been seen in the areas of preservatives and probiotics [3], they have been of increasing interest since novel therapeutic applications have been discovered [4][5][6]. Lantibiotics are gene-encoded and the genes involved in their biosynthesis, regulation and immunity are usually clustered.…”

“…The production of this type of compounds is related to environmental conditions such as pH, temperature, nutrients, and competitiveness . Antimicrobial compounds producers LAL can survive in the gastrointestinal tract due to the direct growth inhibition potential of bacteriocin toward other microorganisms (especially pathogens) . Natural antimicrobial compounds (mainly bacteriocins) have also been receiving attention due to their use potential in the food industry as natural preservatives …”
