Adolescents need help locating and evaluating information about immigration that reflects a panoply of views – particularly views that have been ignored in traditional texts. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into adolescents' engagement with online texts on the topic of immigration and associated concepts as they worked to develop critical digital literacies. The research question for this study was: How do adolescents make meaning about the political issue of immigration as they engage with and respond to online texts? As a theoretical framework, we used Barthes' notions of punctum and studium to illuminate how meaning was made in moments of deep engagement versus momentary reflection. During this study, meaning was made as students (1) clarified collective understandings in small groups, (2) confirmed or contrasted using personal experiences, and (3) held conclusions against a multiplicity of conceptual understandings about immigrants and immigration. These findings illustrate the need to support adolescents, not only with multiple texts but also with multiple opportunities to consider and reconsider the texts in the context of their own experience with immigration.

“…For Spanish speaking immigrants who are more likely to be exclusively Spanish speaking and less likely to speak English with an American accent, the increased motivation to employ language as a tool of resistance may not exist in the same way as was found among second generation heritage language learners (Sánchez-Muñoz & Amezcua, 2019). As anti-Spanish and anti-immigrant have grown in synonymity, and as anti-immigrant sentiments have become increasingly hostile, immigrants may place less emphasis on Spanish language maintenance (Silber Mohamed & Farris, 2020). While the lack of significance for the Spanish language variable in this study prevents us from drawing conclusive insights, further studies should continue to examine the Spanish language specifically as the findings here suggest that the same protective effects presented by the RIM for Hispanic identity importance did not extend to the Spanish language.…”

This study investigates the Rejection-Identification Model (RIM) by examining impacts of group-level and personal experiences with discrimination on different measures of ethnic identity and cultural importance among Hispanic immigrants. The RIM is used to describe associations between discrimination and increased ethnic identity and the mediating role of ethnicity on negative outcomes of discrimination. Growing empirical support for the RIM has prompted inquiry into its application among different populations, including immigrants who face numerous types of discrimination. Using the Latino Immigrant National Election Survey, the study found that the perception of group-level discrimination was associated with a higher likelihood of reporting Hispanic identity importance, however, personal experiences with discrimination were not. Further, results showed that neither type of discrimination impacted cultural or Spanish language maintenance importance. This paper discusses the implications of these findings and how the protective factors presented by the RIM may vary among populations and when considering personal and group-level discrimination.
