BAHA Skin Complications in the Pediatric Population: Systematic Review With Meta-analysis

Abstract: There is strong evidence to suggest that in pediatric patients, the incidence of skin complications, implant loss, and rate of reoperation are higher for pBCIs compared with tBCIs. This information should be part of any discussion about BCI surgery on a pediatric patient.

“…Few of these previous studies, however, have evaluated long-term outcomes in patients with bilateral microtia-atresia (7,20). After 2 years of follow-up, the complication rates were similar to those reported previously for these devices (21,22).…”

“…Minor complications were symptomatic skin reactions requiring intravenous antibiotics, cautery or grafting in 8%, while the other 8% of patients suffered from thickening or overgrowth of skin requiring excision, and 1% had graft necrosis [Badran et al, 2009]. Shapiro et al [2018] published a meta-analysis comparing transcutaneous versus percutaneous BCIs (tBCIs vs. pBCIs). The study showed an overall skin complication rate for tBCIs of 6.3% versus 30% for pBCIs, while the implant loss was 0% for tBCIs and 5.3% for pBCIs, and finally the reoperation rate was 3 and 6.2% for tBCIs and pBCIs, respectively.…”
