Mammals play important ecological roles in tropical regions but are difficult to study due to discrete habits, low population densities, and large home ranges. Thus, the use of attractive substances has frequently been adopted to quantify the distribution and abundance of elusive mammals. However, the insight generated from studies using attractants is often limited by a lack of methodological standardization. To inform the use of attractants in the Neotropics, we reviewed 30 years of the scientific literature that used some type of attractant in mammal studies. From a total of 60 studies, the majority (65%) did not use any control (or pseudocontrol) in their sampling design and only 40% used some statistical test to explicitly evaluate the efficiency of the attractant used. A wide range of edible (animal or vegetal origin) and inedible substances (e.g., scent lures) were used alone or in combination and the effects differed greatly among orders and species. Most studies (67%) targeted or registered carnivores, and this order had the largest number of substances (edible and inedible) used across all studies. There seems to be only a consensus in the use and attraction effect with frugivorous bats (Phyllostomidae) with fruits, essential oils, and floral compounds. The lack of standardization of use of attractants in mammal studies undermines the comparability of results among studies. We conclude with some general guidelines to maximize comparability among studies and to enhance the potential usefulness of the use of attractants for mammals.

SYNOPSISCoumatetralyl rodenticide (in wax block formulation, trade name "Racumin rat and mouse bait blocks") was tested at different densities for effectiveness against rodents in a stand oftwo to three-year-oldPinus patula in the Natal midlands. Live trapping for small mammals in sample plot was conducted before poison placement, then two and five weeks after poison placement. Small mammal species recorded that are potentially harmful to saplings were Mastomys natalensis, Otomys irroratus and Rhabdomys pumilio. Decreases in densities of these rodents were noted after five weeks of poisoning at 16 % poison density (percent of saplings in sample plot with poison at base), and after two weeks of poisoning at 25 % and 50 % poison densities. Faecal pellet counts of trap shy O. irroratus in each of the plots further indicated a decline in density due to poison placement. Some recommendations are made. Under no circumstances should raptor perches be used in the same areas as rodenticides, to prevent secondary poisoning from rodent carcasses.

SYNOPSISThis paper reviews the problem of damage by rodents to young exotic trees, mainly pines, in Southern Africa. Damage is mainly attributed to two species, the vlei rat Otomys irroratus and the four-striped mouse Rhabdomys pumilio. Aspects of the biology of these two species pertinent to their control are outlined, and various methods of preventing or at least reducing the incidence of damage are discussed. Poisoning appears inefficient as a means of control; it has the serious disadvantage of potentially eliminating predators, and thus may be counterproductive in the medium and long term. Selective removal trapping of target species coupled with strict protection of predators would provide a practical interim alternative to poisoning. It appears essential that intensive applied research be initiated in this field.
