HPV is associated with cervical cancer and plays a crucial role in tumor formation. Apoptosis is regulated by different pathways involving genes that either promote (BCL2 gene) or inhibit (BAX gene) cell death. Our goal was to determine whether the BCL2-938C>A (rs2279115) and BAX-248G>A (rs4645878) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are associated with squamous intraepithelial neoplasia (SIL) risk, and whether their phenotypic expression was impaired in these lesions. Two hundred and thirty-one cases showing SIL were classified as low SIL (LSIL, n = 101) or high SIL (HSIL, n = 130), and control subjects (n = 266) with no gynecologically proven SIL were recruited. No statistical difference in the genotype and allelic frequency of the BCL-2-938C>A polymorphism was observed among the groups. BCL2-938C/A and A/A homozygotes carriers had higher distribution of BCL-2-expressing cells in stroma in the SIL group. BCL2 mRNA-expression was not correlated with BCL2-938C>A SNPs in both groups. We did find a strong association of the BAX GG genotype and risk for SIL. No difference was observed between LSIL and HSIL groups. In BAX-248G/A and A/A homozygote carriers, the number of BAX-expressing cells was lower the epithelium area in SIL. However, mRNA expression was higher in SIL patients than in the control group. In conclusion, our data provide evidence that allele G carriers in the BAX-248G>A promoter SNP may influence the development of SIL. However, this genotype does not influence the SIL outcome. Additionally, we suggest a possible role of HPV infection in the inhibition of the expression of BAX protein, decreasing cell death, and favoring cervical carcinogenesis.

The purpose of our study was to evaluate the features of endometrial restructuring when infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. Materials and methods: The study involved sectional material taken from 60 women of reproductive age from 20 to 40 years. Group 1 (30 women) consisted of women who were diagnosed with HIV infection. The control group comprised women (30) without concomitant HIV infection. Results. An average diameter of the endometrial glands (proliferative type) was 8% smaller in HIV infection than in the comparison group. The minimum diameter of the endometrial glands (proliferative type) decreased by 1.73%, the maximum was 5.24% less in the HIV-infected group than in the comparison group. The wall thickness was reduced by 0.5% in HIV infection. The relative volume of the epithelium decreased by 2.4% (proliferative type). There were also significant changes in the structure of the glands and endometrium in secretory phase, as in the proliferative type. Thus, the average diameter of the glands decreased by 5%, the minimum volume of the glands by 5.01%, the maximum by 11.2%, the wall thickness by 1.5%, the relative volume of the epithelium by 9.5%, less in the group HIV-infected than in the comparison group. The thickness of the epithelium increased by 4.5% in the HIV-infected group compared with the comparison group. Conclusion. The study evaluated features of endometrial restructuring in the presence of concomitant HIV infection in women.

People living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are living longer since the advent of effective combined antiretroviral therapy (cART). While cART substantially decreases the risk of developing some cancers, HIV-infected individuals remain at high risk for Kaposi sarcoma, lymphoma and several solid tumors. Currently HIV-infected patients represent an aging group, and malignancies have become a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Tailored cancer-prevention strategies are needed for this population. In this review we describe the etiologic agents and pathogenesis of common malignancies in the setting of HIV, as well as current evidence for cancer prevention strategies and screening programs.
