Balanced Free Essential Amino Acids and Resistance Exercise Training Synergistically Improve Dexamethasone-Induced Impairments in Muscle Strength, Endurance, and Insulin Sensitivity in Mice

Abstract: Our previous study shows that an essential amino acid (EAA)-enriched diet attenuates dexamethasone (DEX)-induced declines in muscle mass and strength, as well as insulin sensitivity, but does not affect endurance. In the present study, we hypothesized that the beneficial effects will be synergized by adding resistance exercise training (RET) to EAA, and diet-free EAA would improve endurance. To test hypotheses, mice were randomized into the following four groups: control, EAA, RET, and EAA+RET. All mice except… Show more

“…Higher EAA intake was related to improved anthropometric metrics, but this appears to have contradictory effects on lipid profile. 7 , 16 , 34 , 35 The study by Im et al conducted in Korea on 25787 subjects showed that increased intake of EAAs significantly lowered serum TG. Although the trend in FBS, BMI, and WC decreased with increasing EAAs intake, it was not significant.…”

“…A diet rich in EAAs may improve glycemic and anthropometric indices by decreasing lipogenic factors, enhancing insulin sensitivity, and boosting glycogenesis. 7 , 16 , 34 , 35 Satiety is affected by increases in glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) levels, thermogenesis, and protein metabolism. However, this may vary depending on the source of the protein.…”

“…It has recently been shown that a diet enriched in free essential amino acids combined with resistance exercise training can improve the synthesis of myofibrillar protein, preservation of both NMJs and fiber type, and biogenesis of mitochondria in an experimental animal model [161]. Dietary supplementation with milk fat globular membrane, containing unique polar lipids and membrane-specific proteins, combined with running produces beneficial effects on NMJs in senescence-accelerated mice [162].…”
