Balancing Rare Species Conservation with Extractive Industries

Abstract: The Colorado Plateau has abundant oil, gas, and alternative energy potential. This energy potential is scattered among a patchwork of land ownership, with private, tribal, and public lands being actively developed for energy extraction. Elements of biodiversity (e.g., listed and sensitive plant and animal species) are distributed among all land tenures, yet the laws protecting them can vary as a function of land tenure. It is imperative to understand the spatial distributions of threatened endangered, and sens… Show more

“…Understanding the dynamic range and migration pattern of Rough-legged buzzards is crucial for developing effective conservation strategies for this, but also for other species. In conservation planning, balancing prohibited management activities within the species' range and the benefits of such activities is a key consideration (Beatley 1992;Jones, Pejchar & Kiesecker 2015;Harfoot et al 2018;Carrell, Hammill & Edwards 2022). By understanding the dynamic range of the species, a more optimal trade-off can be identified, allowing management activities to be carried out when the species is not present.…”

“…Oil and gas companies can collaborate with conservation organizations to protect biodiversity in areas where they operate, through habitat restoration, conservation easements, and other initiatives. Companies can invest in programs that promote the health and safety of their employees and local communities, such as health clinics, safety training, and emergency response preparedness (Carrell, Hammill & Edwards, 2022, Kashmanian, 2019, O'Gorman, 2020. CSI has the potential to play a significant role in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the oil and gas industry.…”

“…ENM is often considered synonymous with Species Distribution Modeling (SDM) and Habitat Suitability Modeling (HSM), though (Brown and Griscom, 2022) highlight some important differences between the terms in certain contexts. ENM is commonly applied to studies researching the distributions of plant species (Carrell et al, 2022), and consequences of future climatic change on their geographic distribution (Nakao et al, 2013;Moor et al, 2015). Our study uses ENM to investigate the geographic alterations in suitable habitat of tree species of the SMO and CNF under various anthropogenic climate change emissions scenarios (Figure 3).…”
