Ballistic Testing Simulation of Ultra-High Strength Steel Water Layer Sandwich Structure

Abstract: In designing materials to resist impact and penetrations, numerical simulation offers effective means to ascertain impact mechanism close to practical experimental procedures. This work presents penetration characteristics of water as an inter-layer between ultra-high strength steel sandwich structure. Residual velocities for both monolithic and sandwiched structures have been investigated. In the case of the monolithic structure, good agreement was found between experimental and simulation results in reducing… Show more

“…The main energy absorbed or dissipated by material is illustrated under a typical stress strain curve in figure 8. The performance of sandwich panels against blast loading is shown to be greatly enhanced for fluid structure interaction scenarios compared to loading conditions involving solid to solid interactions for sandwich plates of equivalent mass [18,75].…”

“…Sandwich structures are prepared by placing a core layer between two panels. [1][2][3] These panels mainly provide the tensile and bending resistances to sandwich structures, [4][5][6] and the core layer bears the transverse shear load. [7][8][9] The density of lightweight and multifunctional sandwich structures is much lower than that of traditional homogeneous solid materials.…”
