Balloon Kyphoplasty Combined With Posterior Instrumentation for the Treatment of Burst Fractures of the Spine-1-Year Results

Abstract: Balloon Kyphoplasty in combination with short-segment posterior instrumentation in traumatic A3 vertebral fractures led to a significant reduction in pain and disability. The combination of both surgical techniques was able to restore and maintain vertebral body height and correction of angular deformity. This technique might offer important safety advantages over an invasive anterior-posterior approach.

“…introduced to provide the initial and fatigue strength of instrumentation for osteoporotic compression and a traumatic burst fracture. 6,[19][20][21][22][23][24][25] Vertebroplasty with posterior lateral fusion provided sufficient stability with anterior column support via a single posterior approach, which resulted in excellent pain relief. Because vertebroplasty is minimally invasive, vertebroplasty with posterior lateral fusion is no more invasive than instrumentation alone and can be performed safely in elderly patients.…”

“…A few recent publications [6][7][8][9][10][11] have combined SSPI with fractured vertebra augmentation, yielding encouraging preliminary results in osteoporotic and younger patients with normal bone stock. All of these studies have been done through an open technique, or by combining percutaneous SSPI with kyphoplasty only.…”
